Pan Am Whitby

On Monday, June 8, the Pan Am Torch will make its way through Whitby. Pick your cheering spot along the torch route or attend a Torch Stop at the Town of Whitby Municipal Offices at 10:30 a.m. The Community Celebration event at Brooklin Community Centre and Library begins at 10:00 a.m. with the torch arriving at 11:45 a.m. Enjoy entertainment, sports and activities, displays and refreshments. Plan to arrive early to get a good spot!

Torch Relay Route

The Toronto 2015 Torch Relay for the Pan Am Games will feature 3,000 torchbearers who will carry the Pan Am flame along its 41-day journey and share the Pan Am spirit in more than 130 communities. Deeply rooted in history and tradition, the Pan Am flame will be lit in May 2015 in a traditional ceremony in Teotihuacan, Mexico, before it travels to Canada. The torch relay will start in Canada on May 30, 2015, and will make its final stop on July 10, 2015, at the Opening Ceremony of the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games.

Pan Am Games will be the largest international multi-sport event held in Canada. This year the following sports make their debut in the roster of games: golf, women's rugby sevens, canoe/kayak slalom, women's baseball and the return of men's softball (Pan Am Games); wheelchair rugby, women competing in sitting volleyball and the return of football 7-a-side (Parapan Am Games). Oshawa – General Motors Centre – Boxing and weightlifting

Whitby and the Pan Am Games

Whitby is proud to be a Host Municipality for the Parapan Am Sports of Boccia and Judo which will take place in the state-of-the-art and fully accessible Abilities Centre.

The Town of Ajax to the west and the City of Oshawa to the east are also proud hosts of the Games. Ajax has the priviledge of being the premier baseball and softball venue located at the ARC. Oshawa will host boxing and weightlifting at the Oshawa Sports Centre.

Gourmet Food Truck Frenzy

The Winter Whitbylicious event is a celebration focusing on fantastic local cuisine. Residents are invited to taste what local restaurants have to offer during this year’s Whitbylicious, which is still running until Sunday, Feb. 8.

Menus are priced from $20 – $30 for lunch, while dinner menus are running from $30 -$40.

Ten locally owned and operated restaurants will be participating in the event and each will have exclusive, prix fixe menus featuring mouth-watering dishes.

The restaurants include 1847 Wine and Beer Bistro, Bella Notte Ristorante, The Brock House, Chatterpaul’s Fine Casual Dining and Lounge, Corrado’s Restaurant and Bar, Hot Rocks Creative Diner, KB, Nice Bistro, Shrimp Cocktail Resto-Lounge, and Tap and Tankard.

The program is FREE to children 7 years of age and under to practice the sport of hockey or ringette. It offers the ice, nets and professional facilities at Iroquois Park Sports Centre as a communal, indoor backyard rink; parents just need to provide the sticks, pucks and protective gear. The program is a key component of the three-way partnership amongst the Town of Whitby, Scotiabank and Whitby Minor Hockey Association.

The University of Ontario Institute of Technology´s (UOIT) Men´s Hockey game against the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières will mark the second annual charity fundraiser game. The funds raised at the game will be donated to Their Opportunity. $2.00 from every ticket sale will be donated directly to Their Opportunity, along with the funds raised from the raffle table, which will feature prizes from UOIT Athletics, the Oshawa Generals and more.

Santa is coming to town

Santa Claus Parade in Ajax

Once again, Ajax residents and visitors are invited to come out and welcome Santa when he arrives in town for “Santa’s Magical Parade of Lights”. The parade begins at the intersection of Bayly Street and Mackenzie Avenue, proceeding east along Bayly and then north on Harwood Avenue South, concluding at Ajax Town Hall. Immediately following the parade will be a special tree lighting ceremony at Town Hall (65 Harwood Avenue South) with children’s activities. Whitby’s Santa Claus Parade

When:                  December 6, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. - Noon

Where:                 Brock Street

Approximately 20,000 people line Brock Street each year to watch the marching bands, dance groups, floats, clowns and musical entertainment - all in anticipation of catching a glimpse of Santa Claus and his reindeer.

The parade is operated by JCI Durham, a membership-based non-profit organization of young people aged 18 to 40 years, who seek targeted solutions to unique problems in the community.

Both JCI Durham and the Whitby Chamber of Commerce judge the best parade entries, which can be viewed on the JCI website. The best overall entry is announced at the Parade Awards Dinner in January.
